Jamnabai is the daughter of Mane (Sarkar) of Rahimatpur, a branch of the Mhaswad clan. She was married to Khanderao, the Maharaja of Baroda. Before Jamnabai, Khanderao had two wives but no children. Therefore, Khanderao had a strong desire to have a child from Jamnabai and had even begun to yearn for it. Khanderao’s brother, Malharrao, was arrested and imprisoned in Padra for attempting to assassinate Khanderao. Unfortunately, Khanderao died in 1870 after a brief illness. And the Queen was alone.

After searching, the records of Gaikwad of Baroda were finally found in the office of Vinayak Bhat Dixit and Dhondbhat Shukla of Trimbakeshwar. Kasirao Gaekwad and his four brothers from Nasik in Kawalane district are the legal heirs of Prataprao, the scion of the Baroda royal family. And Jamnabai’s life fell into the pit. He immediately sent word to Kashirao Gaekwad and his young sons to come to Baroda.

Kashirao Gaekwad and his young sons were brought to Baroda. Now the Queen – Jamnabai had to choose a worthy son. Each child was carefully examined. Of course, they wanted to elect a king for the Baroda princely state. Among the sons of Kashi Rao, Gopalrao was quiet, confident and intelligent than the rest of the children. After coming to Baroda, when the selection committee asked him some questions, he replied, “I have come here to become the king. This won the hearts of the selection committee. This time Jamnabai Ranisaheb chose Gopalrao with her astute eyes. This shows the true vision of Jamnabai Ranisaheb.

Gopalrao was adopted and renamed Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Gopal was 12 years old at that time and had nothing to do with education.
