On 21st September 2025, Maharashtra remembers Roshanbai Satarkar, the legendary Lavani Samrajni (Queen of Lavani). Born in 1941, Roshanbai rose from humble beginnings to become a symbol of grace, resilience, and dedication to traditional Marathi folk art.

Early Life and Family Struggles

Roshanbai Satarkar was born in Rambagh, about 40 km from the historic Bhor Sansthan. She grew up in a simple household, affectionately called Aatya by her family.

She had four sisters: Tara, Gajara, Phulchand, and Sundar. Together, they performed acrobatics with their father, Marutrao, as part of local entertainment shows.

However, when Marutrao could no longer perform physically demanding acts, the family faced a financial crisis. After much discussion, they decided to continue their ancestral tradition — dancing and singing performances.

The sisters were naturally talented, with graceful features and melodious voices, which brought them initial recognition.

The Birth of a Folk Music Troupe

At a young age, Roshanbai and her sisters formed their troupe, Tara-Gajara-Phulchand-Sundar and Sangeet Party. Their performances quickly gained popularity, and for a while, the family lived comfortably.

But tragedy struck when all four sisters passed away within a year. This devastating loss left the family shattered.

Roshanbai’s elder cousin, Bhakkamsheth, a well-known wrestler at the time, encouraged her to continue their cultural legacy. She wore ghungroos (ankle bells) and stepped onto the stage to perform traditional Lavani.

Roshanbai’s Rise to Stardom

Under the guidance of experienced Tamashagirs (folk performers), Roshanbai mastered authentic Lavani styles. She absorbed the treasures of Shaheer Saganbhau and Shaheer Pathe Bapurao, legends known for their unmatched lyrical compositions.

Her performances were marked by:

  • Powerful vocals with natural rhythm.

  • Graceful movements and expressive facial acting (mudra abhinay).

  • Emotional storytelling through Lavani songs.

Audiences were enchanted by her voice, filling theatres across Nashik, Pune, Mumbai, Manmad, and Jalgaon. Each performance was unique, combining dance, drama, and music to create an unforgettable cultural experience.

Preserving the Soul of Lavani

Roshanbai strongly believed in preserving the authenticity of Lavani. She never compromised on tradition and maintained that Lavani should entertain without losing its essence.

Some of her most popular performances included timeless Marathi classics like:

These songs showcased her vocal power and deep connection to the audience.

The Hit That Captured Maharashtra

In 1975, Roshanbai achieved a career-defining moment with the song:

“नेहमीच राया, तुमची घाई”

Composed by Vitthal Shinde, this song became a massive hit across Maharashtra, cementing Roshanbai’s reputation as the voice of traditional Lavani.

Poetic Legacy: Iconic Lavani Verse

Below is one of the traditional verses often associated with her performances:

लगबग लगबग सासूबाई बघ बघ
सुनबाई आणली नांदायला

चुलीपाशी ठेवली रांधायला
चुलीपाशी ठेवली रांधायला

जाऊ बाई रुसली कोपऱ्यात बसली
नणंद बघते निदायला

येऊ कशी तशी मी नांदायला
सूनबाई सून सून

This verse represents the essence of Lavani storytelling: mixing humour, emotion, and vibrant cultural imagery.
