Actor returns to Marvel following his role as Iron Man, Tony Stark.

Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran Robert Downey Jr. is making a comeback as Doctor Doom in a new film dubbed “Avengers: Doomsday.

The film is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo as a part of their return to Marvel. The same crew will also be directing the following two “Avengers” movies, “Avengers: Secret Wars” and “Doomsday,” which will star Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom.

Fans assumed Downey would portray Iron Man, or Tony Stark since he previously said in interviews that he would be open to returning to Marvel. When Downey makes a surprise appearance as the evil Victor von Doom, even the boisterous audience at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation gasps in dismay.

Downey proudly made his comeback announcement at Hall H on Saturday night.

Iron Man (2008) marked Downey’s screen debut as the playboy super-genius Stark, the first film in the interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe created by Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige.

Ten Marvel films, including “Iron Man 2,” “Iron Man 3,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “The Avengers,” “Captian America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” saw Downey reprise his character over the following eleven years.

Iron Man’s fall was one of “Endgame’s” aspects. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige made it clear to Vanity Fair in December of last year that he had no intention of stifling Downey’s emotional departure.

Feige said, “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” about the moment when Iron Man died.

“We would never want to magically undo it in any way because we all worked very hard for many years to get there.”

Now that he’s back at Marvel, Downey won’t be playing Iron Man. This year, the actor expressed his interest in returning to the franchise in a very transparent manner.

After winning an Oscar for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” the actor was questioned if he would ever return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an interview with Esquire magazine. “Yes,” the actor responded without hesitation.

Thank goodness. It’s just too deeply ingrained in my DNA,” Downey remarked.

“That specific position was given to me. You’ve probably seen that I’ve said time and time again not to back Kevin Feige. This is not a winning wager. He possesses the house. He will always win out in the end.

With the announcement of Victor von Doom, the actor’s incredible year is even more noteworthy.

His performance as Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer,” directed by Christopher Nolan, brought him the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award in March. In Park Chan-wooks’ HBO miniseries “The Sympathiser,” Downey made his most recent appearance as part of the ensemble. There, he played several roles, including that of CIA operative Claude. He was nominated for an Emmy for supporting actor in a limited series or movie.
