How the Rath Yatra started in Jagannath Puri

The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is mentioned in the Hindu scriptures and Puranas. The Rath Yatra is described in detail in the Skanda Purana, Narada Purana, Padma Purana, and Brahma Purana. Hence, this festival holds special significance for Hindus.

It is believed that one day Lord Jagannath’s sister Subhadra prayed to him to visit Dwarka. Then Lord Jagannath made her sit in the chariot and tour the whole city to fulfil the wish of her sister, and from then on, this Rath Yatra started.

According to religious beliefs, whoever pulls this chariot after participating in this rath yatra gets the equivalent of performing a hundred yagnas. Why they’re dying: Lord Krishna is worshipped along with his sister Subhadra and brother Balram at the Jagannath Puri temple in Puri. Have you ever wondered why Lord Jagannath resides in Puri?

Once in Dwarkapuri, Lord Krishna, while sleeping at night, suddenly started speaking Radhe-Radhe in sleep. When Lord Krishna’s wife, Rukmini, heard this, she was very surprised. He also told this story of God to all the other queens. All the queens began to think among themselves that Lord Krishna had not yet forgotten Radha.

All the queens approached Mata Rohini to discuss Radha. All the queens requested Mata Rohini to tell about the mystical raas-leela of Lord Krishna with the gopikas. At first, Mata Rohini wanted to avoid all of them, but the obstinacy of the queens said, Listen, put Subhadra on guard first; no one will be able to come in, even if Balaram or Shrikrishna are there.

As soon as Mata Rohini started the story of the mystical raas-leela of Lord Shri Krishna, Shri Krishna and Balram suddenly appeared towards the palace. Devi Subhadra stopped her two brothers at the door with a valid reason. From inside the palace, the story of the raas-leela of Shri Krishna and Radha was narrated to Shri Krishna, Subhadra, and Balram.

Hearing this, a wonderful love interest began to emerge in the limbs of Shri Krishna and Balram. At the same time, his sister, Subhadra, also became emotional. Such was the condition of all three that even after looking carefully, nobody’s hands, feet, etc. could be seen clearly. Suddenly, Narada came there. On seeing Naradaji, the three returned to full consciousness.

Narada prayed to Lord Krishna that the form in which I have seen the three of you embodied in the Maha Bhava may always be adorned on earth for the common people to see. Lord Krishna said. It is said that the same form of Lord Krishna, Balram, and Subhadra ji is still present in Jagannathpuri, which Vishwakarma ji himself made.

Why is there a statue of Lord Jagannath?

According to incomplete mythological beliefs, King Indradyumna was building the temple of Jagannath ji in Puri. He entrusted the task of making the idol of Lord Jagannath to Dev Shilpi Vishwakarma. Before making the idol, Vishwakarma put a condition in front of King Indradyumna that he would make the idol by closing the door, and no one would enter inside until the idols were made.

He also said that if the door is opened earlier for any reason, they will stop making the idol. The king accepted the condition of Lord Vishwakarma, and the construction of the idol started inside the closed door, but King Indradyumna wanted to know whether the idol was being constructed or not.

To know this, the king used to stand outside the door every day and listen to the sound of the idol being made. One day, when the king did not hear any sound from inside, he thought that Vishwakarma had left the work.

Then the door opens. Angered by this, Lord Vishwakarma became distracted from there, and the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra remained incomplete. From that day to this day, the idols are here in this form, and they are worshipped in this form even today.
