“240 Million People, 7 Athletes”: Pakistan Takes Offence At A Commentator’s Remarks About The Paris Olympics

Only seven of the 18 members have flown to France for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

Pakistan has sent a squad of eighteen athletes to compete in the 2024 Olympics in France.

The official launch of the quadrennial event took place on Friday, after a grand opening ceremony. On social media, nevertheless, some remarks made by a pundit infuriated Pakistani journalists and others who stand by them. Out of the 18-person group from Pakistan, only seven competitors and eleven administrators have flown to France for the global tournament.

A pundit reportedly stated: “Pakistan is a country of over 240 million people, but only 7 athletes are competing at the Olympics” during the opening ceremony.

Some were incensed by the comments.

Several Pakistani journalists uploaded a video from the opening ceremony, in which the commentator said something that made them feel embarrassed and let down.

The most well-known athlete among the seven who have come to France for the Paris Games is Arshad Nadeem, a javelin thrower and Pakistan’s lone hope for a gold medal. Among the other athletes competing in the Games are shooters Ghulam Mustafa Bashir (25m Rapid Fire Pistol), Gulfam Joseph (10m Air Pistol, 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team), and Kishmala Talat (10m Air Pistol, 25m Pistol, 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team).

There are also a few wildcard entries on the list: Jahanara Nabi (200m Freestyle; Universality Place), Faiqa Riaz (Athlete, 100m Race), and Muhammad Ahmed Durrani (200m Freestyle; Universality Place).

The opening event of Pakistan’s 2024 Olympic campaign will be the Women’s 10m Air Pistol qualification in Paris on Saturday.
