International Day of Music
International Music Day aims to unite, connect, and support artists worldwide via this one universal theme that has the capacity to unite all people, societies, and civilizations.
For many, music is their source of illumination. It unites individuals and motivates and encourages them. Research has even demonstrated that listening to music alone, as well as playing or singing it, can have a positive impact on one’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
International Music Day’s past
Since singing and humming appear to be a natural aspect of human growth, it is likely that humans have been generating music since the beginning of time. Even at three months old, babies can start to sing!
Although the characteristics of each music vary according to the culture and region from which it originates, music is a human endeavor that is inherent to all human societies. Humans are united by music!
In light of this, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural body (UNESCO) established the International Music Council in 1949 as an affiliate body. Its intention was to convey human solidarity within the worldwide music industry. This organization established International Music Day by fostering connections, supporting, and granting access to musicians worldwide.
First observed in 1975, International Music Day was established in 1973 by the 15th General Assembly of the International Music Council. Promoting musical art across all societal segments and putting the UNESCO ideals of friendship and peace into practice were the goals of the day.
Worldwide, a wide range of approaches to teaching music have been adopted, some of which are culturally specific. Children are taught many forms of music in schools throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and other regions. These forms include singing and playing instruments like recorders or percussion like drums and bells.
International Music Day invites everyone to participate with five objectives, regardless of experience level or skill level, whether they are opera singers or just plain awful at singing:
To allow children and adults to express themselves freely through music.
To give opportunities for children and adults to learn musical skills and languages.
To provide access to musical involvement for all.
To allow musical artists to develop and communicate through media and using proper facilities.
For musical artists to obtain recognition and fair remuneration for their work.
