DUSU Elections: High Court Directs Delhi University VC

Delhi University VC Is Ordered By The High Court To Determine Representation Seeking A 50% Reservation For Women in DUSU Elections
The Vice Chancellor of Delhi University has been ordered by the Delhi High Court to rule on a request for the reservation of 50% of seats for women in the DU Students Union (DUSU) elections, which was presented to the court back in October 2023.

The petitioner had cited the J M Lyngdoh Committee Report of 2006, which recommended steps for the regulation of student body elections in India, the Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela bench noted.

The petitioner’s attorney also referred to the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act 2023, which grants women a one-third seat in the State Legislative Assemblies and the Lok Sabha. He also cited the government of Uttarakhand’s decision to set aside 50% of the seats for female candidates in student union elections at all public and private institutions and universities.
The petitioner stated that, during the previous two years, he had made unsuccessful representations to both the Central government and the University Grants Commission.

In addition, he had asked for a temporary directive to form a commission to safeguard women voting. He made the argument that widespread violence during elections discourages the representation of women.
Mohinder Rupal, the attorney for DU, asked for three weeks to make a decision. In light of this, the Court dismissed the petition and instructed the VC to rule on the petitioner’s representation by October 25, 23 as soon as practicable, in compliance with the law.
