Balshastri Jambhekar’s legacy: Honouring Balshastri Jambhekar on His Birth Anniversary

Early Studies in Marathi and Sanskrit
As a child, Balshastri Jambhekar began studying Marathi and Sanskrit at home under his father’s guidance. By 1825, he had arrived in Mumbai, where he commenced learning English from Sadashiv Kashinath “Bapu Chatre” and Sanskrit from Bapushastri Shukla. He also excelled in mathematics and science, achieving academic mastery across disciplines.
Consequently, he stood out among his peers.
First Indian Lecturer at Elphinstone College
Balshastri enrolled in the Bombay Native Education Society school. His performance impressed scholars. Within a few years, he earned an appointment before any Indian had ever received it as a professor. In 1834, Elphinstone College appointed him its first Indian lecturer, reflecting his exceptional knowledge.
A Polyglot Scholar with Global Recognition
He mastered numerous languages, including Marathi, Sanskrit, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Persian, French, Latin, and Greek. Notably, the French king honoured him for his command of French, confirming his global scholastic reputation.
Research on Ancient Scripts and Dnyaneshwari
Jambhekar studied ancient inscriptions, especially those along the Konkan coast. He wrote scholarly papers on copper plates and rock carvings. Moreover, he issued the first printed edition of the Dnyaneshwari, bringing classical wisdom to the public in accessible form.
Multi‑disciplinary Expertise and Teaching Roles
Jambhekar combined teaching talent with scholarship. He excelled in mathematics and astrology, leading to his appointment as director of the Kolaaba Observatory. Furthermore, he acquired deep knowledge in chemistry, geology, zoology, botany, jurisprudence, history, and psychology. The colonial government recognised his breadth and appointed him as an educational officer for the Bombay Presidency. During this period, he introduced numerous educational reforms.
Founding of the Mirror: First Marathi Newspaper
Balshastri’s birthday inspired Maharashtra’s government to designate “Darpan Day” or Journalism Day in his honour. In the early development of Marathi education, he created Marathi textbooks in subjects such as history, grammar, ethics, mathematics, and science. He authored the first Marathi book on zero. While serving at Elphinstone College, he felt uneasy about colonial domination and pervasive social ignorance.
He believed that teaching at college alone would not uplift society; instead, he resolved to educate the public. Consequently, with support from Govind Vitthal Kunte (known as Bhau Mahajan), he launched the first Marathi newspaper named Darpan.
Purpose and Format of Darpan
On January 6, 1832, Darpan published its inaugural issue in both Marathi and English. Its bilingual format ensured that common Marathi-speaking readers accessed ideas, while English columns conveyed content to colonial administrators. Priced at ₹1, the newspaper used parallel vertical columns, Marathi on one side and English on the other. This innovation overcame linguistic barriers and initiated a new print culture.
Initially, Darpan gained a few subscribers. However, as readers began to embrace its purpose, subscriptions gradually increased. Jambhekar’s ideological stamp remained visible throughout its 8½-year existence, until the final issue arrived in July 1840.
Launch of Digdarshan: First Marathi Magazine
Immediately after Darpan, in 1840, Jambhekar began Digdarshan, Maharashtra’s first Marathi monthly publication. He published articles on physics, chemistry, grammar, mathematics, geography, and history. Two of his students, Bhau Daji Lad and Dadabhai Naoroji, assisted him. For five years, he edited the magazine. Through maps, diagrams, and clear language, he advanced public understanding of scientific and scholarly subjects.
Establishing Public Education Resources
Recognising the importance of public libraries, he founded the Bombay Native General Library. He became the first Indian to publish research papers in the Asiatic Society’s quarterly journal. In 1845, he released the first printed edition of the Dnyaneshwari. At Elphinstone, he also taught Hindustani languages.
His major writings included Nitikatha, The History of England, English Grammar Compendium, Hindustan History, Zero Mathematics, and others. Through Darpan, he disseminated ideas on widow remarriage, rational thought, and scientific perspectives.
Social Reform and Progressive Thought
He pioneered efforts to educate women and reform social practices. As a progressive thinker, he sought scientific justification for widow remarriage and supported women’s education. He encouraged public debate and established the Native Improvement Society, which later inspired the Students’ Literary and Scientific Society. Leaders such as Dadabhai Naoroji and Bhau Daji Lad worked within this movement.
12. Visionary of Knowledge‑Based Modern Society
Balshastri aspired to build a society grounded in knowledge, modern thinking, and progress. Well before his time, he advocated scientific education, rational debate, and social enlightenment. His dream of a knowledge-oriented Indian society remains relevant today. In short, he exemplified the ideals of a visionary social reformer.
Moreover, during his stay at a Christian household, he purified and rejoined Hinduism as an abandoned child facing societal ostracism. This bold move challenged existing orthodoxy with compassion and determination.
13. Final Years and Passing
From 1830 to 1846, he dedicated himself to Maharashtra and India through education, reform, and publishing. Unfortunately, he fell ill and passed away in Mumbai. Notably, his first issue of Darpan launched on his birthday, January 6, leading Maharashtra to adopt that date annually as Journalist Day.
