Angels win five in a row against the Tigers

On Friday night in Anaheim, California, Logan O’Hoppe broke the tie with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers dropped their third consecutive game as the Angels’ winning run reached a season-high five games thanks to the victory.

Luis Rengifo singled with one out to spark the winning rally after he had homered in the first inning. After Taylor Ward singled and Kevin Pillar struck out for the second out, he advanced to second base.
O’Hoppe launched a 418-foot home run to left on a first-pitch splitter by Tigers reliever Shelby Miller (4-6). It was his 11th home run of the year.

Zach Plesac, the Angels’ starter, was lifted after just 2 2/3 innings by the bullpen. In 6 1/3 innings, five relievers combined to shut out the Tigers on a single hit.
Carlos Estevez used only nine pitches to get his 16th save, while Luis Garcia (3-0) earned the victory with a flawless eighth inning.

With Rengifo’s two-run home run against Tigers starter Kenta Maeda and Nolan Schanuel’s leadoff single, the Angels grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Plesac was incisive right away, striking out the first eight hitters. Ryan Kreidler’s two-out single in the third inning gave the Tigers their first baserunner before Plesac missed the strike zone.

The next four hitters Plesac walked forced a run home to tie the game at two.

Plesac’s performance came to an abrupt end after he threw 16 balls and only 4 strikes in those four plate appearances.

Maeda grew comfortable and pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits and one walk while recording four strikeouts on 87 pitches.

For the Angels, Rengifo, Ward, and Luis Guillorme each got two hits.
