An explanation of why Italian boxer Angela Carini left her Olympic match at 46 seconds
The latest scandal to rock the Paris Olympics came on August 1, when Italian boxer Angela Carini pulled out of her match against Imane Khelif of Algeria after 46 seconds of the opening bell.
Khelif’s past of failing a gender test in 2023 has sparked a heated debate between authorities and social media.
Khelif had already failed a test to determine her gender eligibility in 2023. Upon returning to the ring, Carini decided to end her boxing battle with Khelif.
Social media and the sports community went berserk when Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew from her welterweight round of 16 battle against Algeria’s Imane Khelif on Thursday, August 1st at the Paris Olympics in just 46 seconds. Carini said she does not consider the result of the fight to be a loss to her record, even though many believe the decision was made because of Khelif’s history of failing a gender eligibility test at the 2023 World Championship.
After a quick 30-second chat with her coach, Carini went back to the arena but said she wouldn’t fight Khelif, which sparked yet another controversy for the Olympics in Paris.
Carini even went so far as to claim that in her professional career, Khelif’s hits were the hardest she had ever received. Even her chinstrap came undone from Carini’s opening punch of the battle, splattering blood all over her shorts. After giving up the battle, Carini was seen sitting in the middle of the ring crying.
The Algerian, who took home the silver medal from the 2022 World Championship, was ruled ineligible just hours before her fight for the gold medal in New Delhi last year due to her failure to meet the requirements set forth by the International Boxing Association (IBA).
Nonetheless, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) accepted Khelif’s participation in the Games despite the IBA’s ruling. Resolved in her decision, Carini left the ring 40 seconds after the opening bell. Nonetheless, the Italian boxer went on to emphasise that her apparent nose ailment was the reason behind her decision. Despite this, the incident has subsequently generated a range of reactions on social media.
“I don’t see it as a loss. As far as I’m concerned, you’re already a winner and a fighter when you scale those ropes. Whatever the case, I’m good just the way I am.
I didn’t lose tonight… I did only what it took to be a warrior.
I went into the ring and I fought. I did not show up. “I’m leaving with my head held high and my heart broken,” declared Carini.
“I’m a mature woman. The ring is my life. I’ve always had fairly good intuition. And when I sense that something isn’t quite right, I don’t give up. Knowing when to give up is key. It entails having the maturity to recognise when something is enough.” Carini went on.
